Surrogacy FAQ

1. What is the pregnancy history requirement for surrogates?

We require surrogates to have had at least one successful, full-term pregnancy with no significant complications. This includes no history of preterm labor, restricted fetal growth, or recurrent miscarriages. Additionally, you must provide medical records for all previous pregnancies to verify your health and experience.

Yes, surrogates must be either U.S. citizens or legal residents and live in a surrogacy-friendly state within the United States. This ensures the process complies with U.S. surrogacy laws and regulations.

Surrogacy laws vary across the United States. A surrogacy-friendly state has legal frameworks that support the surrogacy process, protecting the rights of both surrogates and Intended Parents. We can guide you in determining if your state qualifies.

Yes, surrogates should have completed their own family before starting their surrogacy journey. This ensures that any risks associated with pregnancy won’t affect your ability to have children in the future and allows you to fully focus on the surrogacy experience.

Yes, surrogates must be financially stable and cannot rely on government assistance programs such as Medicaid or food stamps. This ensures that compensation from surrogacy does not impact your eligibility for these programs.

Travel may be required during your surrogacy journey, depending on the clinic the Intended Parents choose. This typically involves traveling for the embryo transfer and possibly other key appointments. If you are open to travel, you may match faster, but if you have specific preferences or limitations, we will prioritize finding an ideal match for you. All travel expenses are fully covered by the Intended Parents.

Vaccinations are not required to become a surrogate at Mamma Bear SCS. However, Intended Parents often prefer surrogates who are vaccinated against certain illnesses, such as flu or COVID-19. If you are not vaccinated, we will work to match you with parents who align with your preferences, but it may take longer to find the right match.

You’ll work with an independent attorney (paid for by the Intended Parents) to review and sign a legal contract. This contract outlines the terms of the surrogacy arrangement, including responsibilities, lifestyle requirements, and expectations. It’s important to fully understand and agree to the terms before moving forward.

The surrogacy process typically takes 12–24 months from application to delivery. This timeline includes the application process, medical screenings, matching with Intended Parents, embryo transfer, and the pregnancy itself.

Yes, at Mamma Bear SCS, we prioritize aligning surrogates with Intended Parents who share their values and preferences, including termination decisions. If you identify as “No-Termination” and are uncomfortable with selective reduction or termination under any circumstances, we will ensure you are matched with Intended Parents who respect and align with your views. However, being “No-Termination” may take longer to find the right match.

11. Can I work while being a surrogate?

Yes, many surrogates continue to work during their surrogacy journey, provided their job does not involve physically demanding tasks or expose them to unsafe conditions for pregnancy. Flexible work arrangements may be needed for medical appointments or time off for the embryo transfer and delivery. Compensation for lost wages due to required time off may be included in your benefits package.

Sometimes, the first embryo transfer doesn’t result in a pregnancy. In these cases, the Intended Parents may request additional transfer attempts, depending on the agreement. You will be compensated for your time and effort during each transfer cycle, as outlined in your contract.

Surrogates generally do not breastfeed the baby, as the baby goes to the Intended Parents immediately after birth. However, if agreed upon beforehand, some surrogates may pump and provide breast milk for the baby post-delivery.

In the event of medical complications, you will have access to quality medical care and support throughout the process. Your contract will outline compensation for any additional time off work or related expenses. Your health and well-being are always prioritized.

We match surrogates with Intended Parents from diverse backgrounds, including single parents, LGBTQ+ couples, and international families. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and align with Intended Parents whose values and preferences resonate with yours before committing to the journey.

The level of contact with Intended Parents post-birth is entirely up to you and the Intended Parents, as agreed upon during the matching process. Some surrogates and Intended Parents maintain lifelong connections, while others prefer a more formal arrangement.

Postpartum support is an essential part of the surrogacy process. At Mamma Bear SCS, we provide resources, counseling, and community connections to help you transition after delivery. Your physical and emotional well-being are our top priority.

Delivery preferences, such as vaginal birth or C-section, are typically discussed with your healthcare provider and the Intended Parents. While medical needs will ultimately determine the safest delivery method, your preferences will be considered as part of the process.

The legal contract protects both you and the Intended Parents, ensuring their commitment throughout the journey. In rare cases of unforeseen issues, the contract will provide clear guidelines for handling the situation.

Absolutely! A supportive partner or family can play an important role in your surrogacy journey. They’re welcome to attend medical appointments, participate in discussions with the Intended Parents, or simply provide emotional support at home.

Yes, most surrogacy journeys involve taking hormone injections as part of the medical process to prepare your body for embryo transfer. These injections are typically given in the muscle and may seem intimidating at first, but rest assured, you’ll receive full guidance and support to make the process as comfortable as possible.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Purpose: Hormone injections help regulate your cycle and create an optimal environment for the embryo to implant and grow.
  • Duration: Injections are usually required for several weeks before and after the embryo transfer. Your fertility clinic will provide a detailed schedule.
  • Support: You’ll receive thorough instructions and demonstrations from the medical team. Many surrogates also find it helpful to have a partner or loved one assist with administering injections.

If you’re nervous about injections, let us know! We’re here to provide tips, emotional support, and connect you with other surrogates who can share their experiences and advice.
